Just this week, in the aftermath of the highly criticised Hidden Pizza marketing campaign, Stephen Ronchi the Strategic Communications Manager at Sensis, which owns Yellow Pages Australia came out and basically said that using the Yellow Pages is a last resort and the tool for lazy business owners.

“[Yellow Pages is]…for small businesses who may be time-poor and don’t always have the necessary expertise in marketing and advertising, web and content development, search engine optimisation, search engine marketing, etc.”

So to combat this, and teach you the skills even Yellow Pages agrees you need to know to grow your business, Dave Jenyns and I are teaming up to put on a one-day workshop.

A workshop focused heavily on Internet Marketing for local business. Run By Real World Business Owners – Not Some Self-Proclaimed “Marketing Expert.”

Today, once you harness the power of online marketing, the outcome for your business and bottom line is completely different.

It’s going to be a killer.

New Year’s Resolutions are a great way to set your intent for a positive, fulfilling year of growth and accomplishment. But, on the other hand, when the year ends, if you haven’t completely fulfilled your resolutions, it can be frustrating. This usually happens because New Year’s resolutions are often too vague, and don’t include practical steps that lead to a clearly defined goal.

So today, by all means, make your usual big-picture resolutions.

But, in addition, I’m going to suggest you make some sub-resolutions.

Each of these sub-resolutions is designed to give you a long-term benefit (some of them even for a lifetime) with a minimum amount of time and effort.

In fact, each of these sub-resolutions can be completed in anything from a few minutes to, at the very most, a few hours. And they’re all either free or very cheap.

For most of you, many of these items fall into the category of things you’ve “been meaning to do.” Since chances are that you’ve already accomplished at least a few of the items on the list below, there’s no reason why you can’t take half a day this week and get at least six more of the items below done.

So, in the interest of the betterment of your future, the management of your life, and the fresh start of a new year, here are:

SIXTEEN THINGS YOU CAN DO IN ONE DAY TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE

1. Register your full name as a web domain if you haven’t yet.
You never know when you’re going to want your personal website. If www.neilstrauss.com (or whatever your name is) is already taken, don’t worry – there are alternatives.

For example, who owns jamesjoyce.com? Answer: A bar in Dublin beat the author’s estate to it. But there are always other options, like hyphenating the name and getting james-joyce.net or james-joyce.org (check those sites now if you’d like), or choosing less common TLDs (or end letters) like .ws or .me. And you can get own for your very own name for less than the price of a meal at www.godaddy.com, www.networksolutions.com, and elsewhere.

2. Call your cell phone provider. Ask if you can get a better calling plan based on your usage. This way you can afford to do the next item on this list.

3. Subscribe to a newspaper or magazine. Choose a topic that you don’t know about – be it politics, fashion, culture, or technology
- and sign up for the best periodical covering that topic. Rather than choosing the most popular magazine, select one that offers the most in-depth and interesting coverage, like Wired
for technology or Foreign Affairs for politics or Mental Floss for general culture or New Scientist (which last month had a handy article on how to win at rock paper scissors) for science.
Yes, you could read it all online, but it’s great to have a physical magazine to read when you’re on the subway or on an airplane or waiting in line for the restroom at Denny’s.

4. Get a passport if you don’t have one. If yours has expired, get it renewed now. You never know when that great travel opportunity is going to occur, and you don’t want to get stuck at home while your friends are at some great concert at the Acropolis in Greece. If you’re in America, you can simply go to most post offices with two acceptable photos of yourself, proof of U.S. citizenship, and a valid form of photo identification. You can find more information here: http://travel.state.gov/passport. And, for those of you who’ve read Emergency and qualify for a passport to a second country (if, for example, you have a parent or grandparent who was born in Ireland), take advantage of that opportunity now, before the rules change.

5. Back it up. Most people don’t take the time to do this, and regret it later. So copy your entire hard drive onto an external drive immediately; if possible, download a program like Acronis True Image that will simplify the restoring process and regularly make backups (or for Mac owners, start using Time Machine or SuperDuper). Also backup your cellphone, PDA, and any other personal-information-storing device.

6. While you’re at it, make photocopies of your credit cards, passport, drivers license, social security card, birth certificate, and other important papers. If you keep a journal or anything similarly irreplaceable, photocopy that. Keep these in a safe deposit box, parent’s house, locked file cabinet, or any other secure location, preferably outside your own house. They’ll be invaluable in the event of theft, loss, fire, dinosaur attack, or any other unplanned disaster.

7. Look through your refrigerator and cabinets. Read the labels on the food. Stop buying anything high in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, and sodium. And start shopping healthier today. Here’s a handy free e-book from the government on how to eat healthy: http://www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines/dga2005/document/pdf/DGA2005.pdf

8. Get business cards. Don’t have a business? It doesn’t matter. Sites like vistaprint.com will send you 250 free ones (though there’s a shipping fee of under $6). Never hurts to look professional. And if you know the number close from Rules of the Game, these will come in particularly handy.

9. Sign up for US Airway’s e-Saver, Southwest’s Ding!, American Airlines’ Net SAAver, or any other wackily-named airline program that offers last-minute, low-cost travel options so you can take quick weekend getaway whenever you feel like it. Flights can be as low as $15.

10. Check your credit report for identity theft, or any other misinformation or errors that could harm your financial status and options. You are entitled to one free check a year at www.annualcreditreport.com.

11. Learn how you work: I’m often asked at signings what books I found the most useful for learning The Game. Here are the ones I’ve recommended:

Mastering Your Hidden Self by Serge “Kahili” King;
The Art of Seduction by Robert Greene;
Introducing NLP by Joseph O’Connor and
John Seymour; and a book on evolutionary psychology, such as The Red Queen, Sperm Wars, or The Selfish Gene.

12. Make an appointment to get a physical exam from a trusted doctor. Head off any potential medical problems that may hinder an active, fun year. Also recommended: make an appointment with a dentist to get your teeth cleaned if you haven’t done so in the last six months. You may also want to call for an eye exam if you haven’t had one in the last four years. (Make sure you get a second opinion if any of the above tries to talk you into any costly procedure.)

13. This is not for everyone, but some of you–and you know who you are–definitely need to do this: Throw out all your socks. Every last one. Now go buy new pairs that actually match and don’t have holes in them. You’ll feel like a new man. Remember, get black socks. White socks are for athletic activities only. I don’t want to catch any of you guys here wearing white socks in the bars or clubs!

14. Get prepped: You’ve read Emergency by now, so go sign up for a local CERT class (or an equivalent if you live outside the U.S.). It’s free and will teach you the basics of survival and disaster preparedness so you can be a local hero. Plus you’ll get a nifty green uniform like in this photo: http://www.citizencorps.gov/cert/
While you’re there, enter your zip code in the box to find CERT classes in your area.

15. If you want to improve your appearance, you’ve probably already resolved to work out or join a gym. So here’s a sub-resolution:Buy a suit. (Or a dress if you’re a woman.) But don’t just get any suit. Get one that’s slightly closer to the size you want to be this year, whether it be a little bigger or a little smaller than your current measurements. Try it on every Saturday morning as a reminder to stick with your fitness program; until, one day, it fits perfectly, and you wear it out and feel like a million dollars.

16. And as long as you feel like a million dollars, you might as well figure out how to make a million dollars. You can find out how much money you’ll need to tuck away here: http://partners.leadfusion.com/tools/kiplinger/savings01/tool.fcs

Afterward, you should know just exactly what you’re worth so you can figure out where you stand financially at the start of this year. You can do so here: http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/networth/networth.html

Phew. That looks like a lot. But set half a day aside, and knock them off the to-do list one at a time. You’ll wake up the next day a new man. (Unless, of course, you’re a woman.)

Alright, get cracking.

And have a great 2010.

Talk to you all soon.

Best,

And yes it’s true… It appears that Google is now indexing the Apple Itunes App Store.

Now This Is BIG News….

See, one of the ‘keys’ that a lot iPhone Application developers have missed when trying to sell/market/distribute their applications is that have relied on the App Store itself to generate the sales…

They are coders, not marketers – and this is where you and I have the upper hand.

Making the type of money you can ($37,000USD in one day) with an iPhone App is not another Kevin Costner ‘baseball’ movie…

If You Built It… They Will Not Come.

Just like any other business project, it’s not about the product….

It’s the marketing that typically makes the difference between success and failure.

Market Research and Traffic are the first two steps for any business project for a reason.

And with Google now indexing the App Store… here comes the traffic.

What will be interesting to see, is ‘how much’ traffic people start to get, what the conversion rates will be, and ‘how to’ influence your Apps position in the SERPs.

Side Note: The name you give your app and the keywords you use in your Apps description have never been so important:

p.s. I’ll have an update on the 30DC Book, along with a more detailed report (and maybe some interviews) on iPhone App marketing up here in the coming weeks.

p.p.s. I also wanted to let you know about a bundle of free gifts worth over $1,500 that my buddy Shaun is giving away – You can check them out at
http://www.internetmarketingcoaching.com.au/PreneurMarketing … WARNING! While you are there you will see a pitch.. a pitch for a coaching program I can highly recommend. Shaun is one of the few Australian internet marketers that have the runs on the board. Anyway, check it out and at least consider the offer.

With New Years Eve 2008 approaching, I was creating the ultimate party mix tape (itunes playlist) for the event, and thought I would record it and share my ‘blueprint’ for DJ success
I actually try to keep the video ‘on point’ and make some really bad marketing analogies too.
Happy New Year.

An Open Letter To Basketball Australia and the NBL…

Firstly, let me say ‘well done’ on the vote yesterday to merge the NBL & Basketball Australia – It was always going to be a battle to try and progress the sport, when the face of the sport (NBL) can’t keep teams in it’s league.

As FoxSports.com.au reported “Australian basketball officials have celebrated a momentous day in the chequered history of the sport in this country, with an unanimous agreement to bring the national and domestic organising bodies under the one umbrella.”

The best part of what has been reported thus far is “With this agreement, the new administration is set to press ahead with its negotiations with Fox whose proposal is believed to include live coverage of every game in a revamped NBL from the 2009-10 season onward, plus regular internationals featuring the Boomers and Opals”… I must congratulate whoever negotiated this ‘potential deal’ given “the 2007/08 final Championship game attracted only 68,000 viewers on Fox Sports – about 10% of basketball participants in this country.”

The one thing that I hope the BA board, club owners and everyone else involved in the league realise is that “It’s not about putting a winning team on the floor”.. Yes you read that right.

I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but most “profitable” ideas are.

As I really focused on in my original post, and DSEG incorporated into their ‘NBL Future Direction Report’, the “fans” who come to put their “bums” on seats are paying for a night of entertainment… and seeing their team “win” is only a portion of that entertainment “pie”…

I was at the Tigers v Breakers game in Melbourne last night, and even though the Tigers lost… Every single person in The Cage got their moneys worth and was entertained as the game went down to the wire… As did the Cairns v Wollongong game I was at last weekend.

This is even more evident in that fact that Australia is currently ranked as the number two basketball nation in the FIBA Global Rankings.… but clearly this hasn’t translated into a strong supporter base, and proves the standard of play has little to do with the number of people attending games.

So invest in the ‘game-night’

I was really excited when I walked into the Taipans v Hawks game in Cairns last Saturday night, and was greeted by their Mascot pre-game… and again it occurred at the Melbourne match last night, where the Tiger was walking the corridors … but the Tigers took it to the next level with face-painting and give-aways. (Maybe some people inside the NBL actually took my first blog post on the topic seriously)

What about approaching the Nintendo’s and Sony’s of the world and strike a deal where you can have Wiis and Playstations available to be played at the venue an hour before tip-off… Or team up with Rebel Sport, to get a portable hoop(s) to game night where you can run ‘most free throws’ in a row competitions etc etc…. Anything that can make game-night a family event… and help businesses get their products in-front of their target market.

In the DSEG report they mention “Commercial reform must address these issues but has limited funds to do so…. There must be a balanced budget which means that
the Board will be aggressive in pursuing commercial, government and non traditional revenue lines to drive this growth and to ensure a profitable business”.. and it’s these kind of initiatives that will result in the largest ROI, given their cost-effective implementation.

Also, what happened to the ‘best sign’ contests that every club used to run back in the 90’s where the best banner won a signed team ball ?? I won about 7 signed balls over the years, and still have not used any of them.

It’s All About Building A Community

As I ranted in a video on the NBL I uploaded on Youtube a month or two ago, which has had over 9,000 views ( Watch Here), the ‘thing’ that is really taking over in marketing and business building today is ‘communities’ – Look at the facebooks, myspaces and all the other ’social media’ businesses that are becoming the ‘places of choice’ – it’s all about community.

And according to the Dynamic Sports & Entertainment Group report, “More people play basketball in Australia than AFL” – How much more of a community do you need ?

And it’s this ‘community’ that the NBL has been missing. In my previous post I spoke about the need to get players back to schools and interacting with the fans; this all helps build a community.

Also, allow people to comment on the stories at NBL.com.au – My previous blog post received 28 comments (including one from a national coach), and this is typically a business/marketing site. Imagine what sort of interaction, feedback and conversations could be had on the nbl.com.au site, where 1,829,463 unique basketball fans have gone over the past 10 months.

Allowing these 1.8 million people to interact and converse creates a stronger bond and greater feeling of being “in” – which equates to more bums on seats.

Get back to schools

I am not sure what else to say about this one… Maybe this has to occur on a club level but surely you can pull rank and strongly encourage this from a BA/NBL level.

And I think the one unique idea proposed by Dynamic Sports & Entertainment Group to “Introduce a system whereby NewNBL and WNBL Clubs are allotted points for each interaction with a State/Territory Association and clubs must accumulate a certain number of points each season in order to retain their license the following season” is brilliant and one that should absolutely adopted.

Advertise the league - I’d like to see that.

The AFL’s ‘I’d Like To See That‘ campaign was one of the best pieces of sports marketing I’ve seen… and if the man behind the South Dragons inception, Mark Cowan, who owns a global branding and advertising outfit Cowan Design can’t set-up with a stella marketing/advertising campaign, than I don’t know who can.

The DSEG report mentions: “Declining crowds and TV market share and apathy towards its heroes have led to the NBL not taking its rightful place as a major tier one competition in Australia.” – I’m sorry but which players in the league are meant to be looked as ‘heroes’ ? You need to position and market the players you want the kids to latch onto…

Let kid’s under 12 go to all games for free…

Let’s face it, the economy is tightening up, discretionary spending is going to get lower and things like sporting events are going to get hit - hard. If you allowed children under 12 or 13 to go to the games for free it would make the night out more accessible for a lot of families, encourage groups of kids to get to games and build a strong ‘life-long’ bond with the sport like I did when I as younger… and translate into lots of ‘back-end merchandise sales.

Speaking of kids; why oh why would DSEG suggest to invest money (they openly don’t have) to “Re-launch Aussie Hoops in 2010 to be a truly nationally consistent program engaging junior players in the sport of basketball.” when there is a already developed, tested and internationally endorsed program available to them in ‘Billy Bounce’

Billy Bounce was developed in Australia, by an ex-NBL player and endorsed in countries all across the globe (including USA, Asia, Ireland & Dubai) and will be easily and effortlessly rolled out across this country in an AFL Auskick style, if BA simply pull their heads out of their ass and allow an entrepreneur to ‘make some money’ himself along the way.

Yes, the reason (I believe) it wasn’t endorsed by the NBL and BA, is the the muppets who were in control at the time and ran the sport into the ground, didn’t want to see a ‘company’ to also make money with a junior program roll-out, even though BA and the local communities leagues would make significant $$ under the proposed model as well… So they went ahead and sunk a lot of money they didn’t have into a ‘failed’ AussieHoops program, that if relaunched will need to have more money thrown at it.

Allow Outside Help

Yep, this is blatant, outright and obvious pitch. I want to help. I know I can help…. Just ask.

Even though I would accept one of the DSEG suggested spots on the new “seven person Board made up of five elected and two appointed directors, all of whom are independent”, just ask me to sit in on some planning sessions, I guarantee I can make a difference to the sport I love in this country.

Once the league and clubs put their focus on making the game night an ‘event’… they will start to attract the ‘fans’… and the sponsors $$$ will soon follow‘

<font size="-3"Don’t forget to check out an earlier post I wrote on the NBL entitled ‘Reviving A Brand – The ABC’S Of The NBL’

I’ve had a recent change in my thinking when it comes to ‘getting things done’ and productivity… I no longer rule my day based on ‘priorities’… it’s now all about ‘context’

This new outlook is comes from David Allen’s book ‘Getting Things Done’, where David outlines the way to get more done is by focusing on context; such as your location, time and energy levels. Obviously phone calls can only be made when I’m near a phone… I can only reply to emails when I am near my laptop (or iPhone)… etc etc…

And it’s this focus on ‘actions’ and ‘contexts’ that have changed my productivity so dramatically.

But before I go on a big rant about ‘contexts’, let me outline the core principles to Getting Things Done:

1. Collect

The first step is a pretty obvious one, but like most ‘obvious success principles’, it seems to be overlooked due to it’s simplicitly…

Anytime anything crosses your mind that requires some sort of response or action from you, Write It Down; carry a notebook, a little tape recorder, email yourself or put an in-box on your desk… Any tool that gets it out of your head and into the ’system’.

2. Process

Next you clear the items from the memory bucket(s). Start at the top of the list, deal with one item at a time, and do not move onto the next until one of the following things are done and never put anything back into the in-box, every item on the list has one of the outcomes below.

So with every entry ask yourself one simple question “is there an action I need to take about this item?”

If an item requires action:

do it right way (if it takes less than two minutes*),

delegate it to someone else, or

defer it for action later (using the method below).

If it’s not something that can be ‘actioned’,

file it,

toss it out, or

save it for possible action later.

The underlying rule of this is The 2-minute Rule: If it takes less than 2 minutes to do something, do it right away.

3. Organize (The Defered Items)

The foundation of this entire GTD system is lists. I love lists – it gives you structure and makes your memory redundant (something I really need)

The first set of lists you need are Projects. A project is anything that will need more than one action to complete. Think; ‘create new website for X’ or ‘Prepare presentation for Y’ or ‘Relaunch MCG Carpet Business’ etc etc.

Just to clarify here – ‘creating a website’ or ‘Relaunching MCG Carpet Business’ isn’t an action; it’s a project made up of a bunch of little ‘actions’.

And it’s in this principle that I had one of my biggest ‘awakenings’ – One of the major reasons I wasn’t getting through my to-lists is that my to-list was filled with projects, not actions… and I always felt overwhelmed… But as I outlined in a previous post “It’s this focus on actions rather then goals , that allow us to get started and see progress, which stimulates motivation and instills habits.

Instead of looking at a project or goal as a result, try looking at it as a series of small cumulative actions; and if you do those ‘simple’ actions the result will take care of itself.

So once you have all your ‘Projects’ outlined, you need to list all the Actions required to complete that ‘Project’…

So for every item/project/goal requiring your attention, decide what is the next action you can take. (For example – if the item is ‘Relaunch MCG Business’, the next action might be ‘count how many MCG Carpet squares are locked in the safe’, or ‘call Ken about framing cost estimates’, or something similar.) No matter the number of steps and actions required to complete the project, there will always be something that you need to do next/first, and this should be recorded in the next actions list under each project. .

Next (and and the most powerful step of GTD) is to give each ‘Action’ a ‘Context’. And the context is based on what/where the action is completed such as ‘@office’ for actions that can only be done in the office, ‘@phone’ for actions that require a phone call, or ‘@email’ for email related actions.

And if you’re super anal give it a time context based on how long it *should* take to complet; @10m, @30m, @2h etc etc

4. Review + Do

Now that you’ve processed your actions and organized your projects, you need look at those lists. You need to review the lists throughout the day, and choose what needs to be done next based on:

    * context (where you are)
* time available
* energy available

By breaking down your to-do list into projects and actions there are two amazingly freeing outcomes:

1. By sitting down and focusing on single project and working through those already planned actions.. the cumulative effect principle kicks in, and you begin to see progress and build momentum.

Not to mention the benefits of sitting down and focusing a solid block of time on one project… as opposed to doing what most of us do, and jump from project to project based on what’s on the top of the pile and the ‘biggest’ priority.

2. Plus by focusing on ‘contexts’; if I am in an ‘email mood’ I can simply filter my ‘next action list’ by @email and just knock off all the emails I need to send across a series of projects very very quickly….or I can still work towards my goals in a sequential manner based on ‘Where I am’ or ‘What I have available’… So if I am driving between meetings I can simply filter my actions by @Phone and make all the calls needed.

With the power of context, whether you want to work through a projects actions, or want to focus on a type of action (like make a bunch of phone calls in the car) the ‘context’ tag gives you flexibility and never leaves you asking “What should I do next?”
