The Importance of Web 1.0

web20logos.jpgOK, so we’ve all heard the endless talk of Web 2.0…Twitter this… and Facebook that.

And, yeah I couldn’t agree more that there are some HUGE benefits in the Web 2.0 world, especially with the launch of Facebooks PPC program and the demise of email usage…

BUT the importance of considering 1.0 on the web can never be overlooked.

So what do I mean when I say 1.0 ? Well, I’m not talking about the “static web” (as opposed to the viral and interactive world of Web 2.0)… but the importance of considering the concept of Version 1.0 when developing your website(s).

See, most people go about launching a site the wrong way… They wait until the contact form actually works, or they wait until the new logo is redesigned, and as surprising as it may be, I’ve even heard people put off the launch of an ecommerce site because the shopping cart didn’t work (Read on… I do have a coherent point, trust me)

But, before I do go on and make sense of my above point I want to take a sideways step and discuss the WHY of a website.

Just like any form of advertising or marketing, before you take any action you must have a clear goal or outcome for it. There are a number of reasons why you would launch a website, maybe it’s so you can point customers to a interactive brochure, or maybe it’s stroke the ego of the owners with a jazzy flash-filled website.. or if you are a smart entrepreneur it’s to create a new lead generation source.

So, I am going to assume here that you are the latter, a smart, forward thinking marketer, with your websites sole purpose being to generate new leads for your business- be it online or off.

If this is the case, the first thing your website needs is new traffic (visitors) and there are essentially two ways you can get this.
1. Use some form of Pay-Per-Click advertising, like Google Adwords to drive traffic to your site from the search engines; or
2. Get on the first page of Google for free – That is use search engine optimisation techniques to get high rankings on the SERPs and get visitors at NO COST.

Now, not to get into a huge discussion on internet marketing here, but again I am going to assume you are highly intelligent, an educated marketer (read: regular reader of this blog) and want to take over the world,so you will want to employ both of the above tactics because if you are not of the front page of Google you don’t exist online PERIOD.

One of the biggest keys to achieving success with point 2, search engine optimisation, is the length of time Google (and the other search engines) have known about your domain (website) and the time they’ve had to read and index your pages content.

So back to my original point… If you enlist a website designer to create your new website, or if you go it yourself, there will be a decent amount of time between the time you register your domain and the time when you get the site live online – upto 6 months in some cases.

That’s 6 long & valuable months of lost, wasted, abandoned and squanded time.

So my point is this…. when you consider the SEO aspect of your web presence, and how important it is… It makes absolute sense to get some content online as quickly as possible, so you can use that time to court some of Google’s love.

The beauty of the web is that you can launch a site, before anyone has to see it… Let me say that another way – It is a GOOD thing to launch a site early, before any human sees it.

It’s with this logic that I say, uploading and making an e-commerce site live even when it’s shopping cart doesn’t work makes logical and commercial sense. The Google bots will spider the pages and get them listed in the index whether the shopping cart is active or not – All you are going to launching a version 1.0 of the site.

Guy Kawasaki was on the money when he said at a MDRT conference “Version 1.0 never means you have to say sorry”.

Most people I have worked with who are launching a website have all the content written before any design work is contracted, so the first mandate you should be giving your developers is to create a series of basic HTML pages with nothing but title, h1 and internal href tags throughout the content, for the search engine spiders to crawl, read and index.

Implementing this technique will see you well on the way to a good front page listing on Google, Yahoo and other search engines before your fully fledged web 2.0 style site is launched.

Also, if you are one of those domain hoarders or squatters, who own a bunch of URLs for potential future use, you should be employing this technique too… The longer the relationship a domain (URL) has with Google the quicker you will get listed for other keyword phrases you may wish to target in the future. This is the secret.. it doesn’t matter what phrase you target initially, getting listed for a completely new phrase will be quicker if you have a history then if you don’t.

Most Sales Environments Make Selling Easy

Here is a syndicated copy of an article I recently wrote for the Enlightened Wealth Institute.

There you go, I said it! Most sales environments make selling easy.

Now, if you are in the sales game you are probably going red in the face right now, ready to go to war with me over this, especially if you have a boss like Glengarry Glen Ross but, if you consider the parameters in which most sales people work – selling advertising, insurance or soft-drink accounts – it allows for the building of relationships (which makes the sale easier), the ability to continually follow up (which makes the sale easier) and the reassurance of the next sales period (which again makes the sale easier).

How does the game change when you need to sell a project? A project that has a defined and distinct end?

On the surface there’s not much different: it’s all about getting as many hungry and qualified leads into your funnel as quickly as possible and helping them discover that opening their wallets and throwing money at you is in their best interests.

Selling a project, however, needs to solicit action immediately… not action later so the sale will fall in the next month’s budget there is no reassuring next sales period.

Most sales trainers will preach the adage that it takes 6-7 contacts to make the sale and, if you have the luxury of time and opportunity for repeat business, these cliched statements actually do have merit.

But, when selling for immediate response, you need to make an offer that moves the prospect to jump NOW. You don’t have time to educate the prospect over 2 long lunches, a chat on the par 5 and 4 direct mail pieces.

It comes down to a powerful offer with a solid and justified end. Did you notice the word justified?

Simply adding this offer expires on February 30th won’t cut it– you need to explain and justify to the prospect, in their terms, why they must act now and why the offer honestly can’t last. It’s amazing what a candid explanation will do to your bottom line.

Now, did you also notice the term hungry prospect above? This is the real key to selling projects (and accounts).

The late Gary Halbert often asked if you were to start a hamburger stand and could be the best at one element what would that be?

Having the best hamburgers, a secret sauce, the best location, the best pricing, etc., etc.?

Well, all of that is irrelevant all you need is THE hungry crowd, as they will eat anything if they are hungry enough.

Think And Grow Rich Was Written By A Girl!

tagr.gifAccording to the biography on the great man, Napoleon Hill’s wife at the time, Rosa Lee wrote the manuscript for the greatest motivational, financial and non-fiction book of all time..

In fact she wrote THREE manuscripts for the book…Hill had this to say about her enthusiasm…“…By the time she had finished the manuscript on the third rewrite…the tips of her fingers were so worn and blistered she had to tape them so she could work…”

The biography all this is revealed in was written by Michael J. Ritt jr. and Kirk Landers – Michael J. Ritt jr. worked with Napoleon Hill for ten years towards the latter end of Hill’s working life.

Very interesting little fact I found and wanted to share….

Facebook Pages – The New Squeeze Page.

This the second post in a short series of posts on Facebooks new advertising programs – Social Ads, Facebook Pages and Facebook Beacon. Check out the first post in the series here..

Ok, so today we are here to talk about the wonderful world of Facebook Pages.

Facebook Pages are one of the newest features the team over in Palo Alto, Calif. have recently launched, along side Social Ads and Facebook Beacon (more to come).

So What Exactly is a Facebook Page ?

A Facebook Page is simply a modified facebook profile designed purely for businesses, bands, no-profits or even celebrities to interact with their ‘fans’.

Other Facebook users can express their support by adding themselves as a fan, as opposed to becoming a ‘friend’.

Basically, on the surface it appears no different to a typical profile, which is why it’s been launched without much fan-fare (pardon the bad punn) from the blogosphere… but from a marketing perspective it’s a whole lot more powerful.

Here’s why…

1. You Can Send Updates To Your Fans Regularly

See, unlike facebook profiles where it can be a royal pain in the rear trying to community with all your friends at once, sending ‘email’ blasts to all your fans is a breeze.

Having a tonne of fans, is exactly the same as having a traditional email database you do blasts too… But inside Faceboook there is no spam or no junk mail to contend with and with internet users opting for communication services like facebook over hotmail and traditional email its where the web is headed people.

In the current landscape of the web, deliverability is one of the biggest issues facing marketers.. but here inside Facebook it’s not an issue at all – your messages go straight to their facebook-inbox and their news feed (I think)

2. You Can Add STUFF to your Facebook Page

Just like a facebook profile, but in a much ‘cleaner’ way, you can engage/interact with your fans via videos, reviews, flash content, and much more.

For example, one of the biggest Facebooks Pages to date is that of the great band – The Dave Matthews Band – where they have added a tonne of this cool STUFF to their page… such as a discography, a bunch of pics, and online music player plus an online shop where fans can buy sh*t.

Ed Dale has done this really well on his Facebook Profile aswell – Here he has added a small number of videos, a few disucssion topics for his fans to gather and communicate (it’s basically a mini-social-network) plus he has already started to use the point above to communicate to his already 991+ fans.

3. Your Fans Love You, and their friends will know it too.

When your fans interact with your Facebook Page, the actions they take are automatically generated into social stories and added to thier News Feed, which their friends will see the next time they log into Facebook.

So when they become a fan, it’s link back to their Facebook profiles news feed, which in turn virally invites more people to interact with your page, which generates more social stories and drives even more traffic to your Page – it’s viral marketing on steroids.

As they say “Think of it as word-of-mouth marketing, only completely free and happening online.”

4. Link It All Together With Social Ads

Some of the feedback I’ve got from my original post on Facebooks social ads, was on the fact that Facebook will not allow you to send traffic to a squeeze page… and savvy marketers kept asking ‘what’s the point if I can’t capture names for a database’ – Well this is the answer…

Send them to a Facebook page about you particular niche topic and encourage them to become fans with videos and content (described in section 2). This way, their whole experience is inside Facebook, they will feel more comfortable and thus increase your conversion rates…

Here’s The Plug: As I meantioned the other day, Ed Dale and the crew at the Immediate Edge are creating a stella ‘how to’ course on using Facebook for internet marketing… and releasing the content for FREE to Immediate Edge members. They actually just realeased the first two videos of the series today and I must tell you it’s going to be amazing.

Now, I haven’t spoken to Ed in the last day or so, so I don’t know what the course will cost when it’s actually launched to the general internet marketing community, but if Ed’s recent Dominiche course is anything to go by, the $97 to get into the Immediate Edge is an absolute bargin and you’d be mad not to join today.

P.S. Ed just released a short video on his Tubby Nerd blog you may be interested in – Check it out here.

P.P.S. If for some reason you are still not convinced joining the Edge is going to help you make bazillions online, i’ve got permission from Dan and Ed to create an ‘exclusive inside video tour’ of the Edge which I will post on the blog in a few days… Make sure you subscribe to the RSS Feed so you don’t miss that one.

P.P.P.S. Before you rush off to join the Edge, you may want to check out my “currently lame” Facebook Page and become a fan here… Please excuse the WannaBe America’s Next Top Model photo – I blame Fleur.
